NZ Hospital Bag Checklist

A curated list for Kiwi parents. Based on common requirements for New Zealand DHBs and birthing centres.

For Mum

  • Your NHI Number and Maternity Notes
  • Birth Plan (if you have one)
  • Loose, comfortable clothes for labour
  • Front-opening PJs or shirts (for easy breastfeeding)
  • Maternity pads (at least 2-3 packs)
  • Big comfy cotton knickers (dark colours)
  • Nursing bras and breast pads
  • Lip balm (essential if using gas & air)
  • Toiletries (keep it simple: toothbrush, hair ties, deodorant)
  • Flip flops or slippers

For Baby

  • Car seat (NZ hospitals require this for discharge)
  • 3-4 Merino or cotton bodysuits/onesies
  • Woollen hat and booties (even in summer)
  • Wool baby blanket or wrap
  • Nappies (newborn size)
  • Water wipes or cotton wool

For Dads & Partners

  • Board shorts or swimwear (if you're helping in the birthing pool)
  • Comfortable shoes (you'll be on your feet more than you think)
  • A change of clothes and basic toiletries
  • Phone and an extra-long charging cable
  • List of important people to update
  • Mints or gum (to keep breath fresh for close-range support)
  • Coins or card for parking and vending machines

Essentials & Snacks

  • Phone charger (extra-long cable is best)
  • Drink bottle with a straw
  • OSM bars, trail mix, or quick energy snacks
  • Powerade or coconut water for hydration
  • Change for the vending machine or parking

What not to bring

Expensive jewelry or large amounts of cash
Too many bulky items (the rooms are smaller than you think)
Electric heaters, fans, or diffusers (fire hazard)
Scented candles (not allowed in clinical rooms)
Large suit cases (stick to a medium bag or backpack)
Formula milk (NZ hospitals are 'Baby Friendly'—provided if clinically needed)
